Beware of “Domain Service” Scam

domain scam noticeOne of the more common scams today is something known as the “domain service” scam. This is an email sent by scammers that try as hard as they possibly can to make it look like it is coming from your domain registrar. At first glance, it looks like you are about to lose your domain name.

It will usually have the words “Expiration Notice” in bold or red letters. It will list an expiration date that is in the very near future. And it will have a link to “send a payment”. Notice it does not say “renew domain”.

Although deceptive in nature, what they are doing may be legal. They use carefully crafted words and emails to make you react impulsively to what you think is an expiring domain name. But they are actually offering some type of domain listing service and as long as they make some effort regarding your site they may be cleared legally.

If you inspect the email closely, usually near the bottom, you can see that they call the service they are offering a “domain service” or ” SEO domain registration”.

Even if they just trick a portion of the people receiving these emails they can make millions of dollars. They get the person’s contact info from public directories of registered domains and who registered them.
