AI Content – When Will Search Engines Flip the Switch?

I am sure this has happened to you. You see an article featuring a topic in which you are really interested and know a bit about. Some point while reading the article you realize things are aren’t adding up. The sentences don’t quite make sense, or it is stating facts or figures you know to be inaccurate. Welcome to the world of “AI Slop”.
More and more website owners are publishing AI generated content on their websites. It’s easy and convenient. But they are putting too much trust in AI’s ability to create accurate and coherent information. And they forgot the golden rule of SEO: “There are no short cuts”. More accurately, “The shortcut which may seem to work today won’t tomorrow.”
It’s true that search engine managers across the board have stated AI content is fine so long as it adds value and is comprehensive. But when almost half of AI generated content contains egregious errors, how valuable can it be?
AI gathers its information from existing web pages on the internet. But what happens when a huge chunk of the content online is AI slop loaded with false content? The error machine simply feeds on itself. I alluded to this in a previous article where I likened it to a snake eating its own tail.
All this will lead to what I call “The Great Switch”. One day, without warning, search engines will start valuing AI generated content less and less. Currently, every major search engine is involved with their own AI projects. They have all bought into AI being the future of information. That fact alone means that they won’t come out and say what they are already noticing, which is, AI content is really tainting the internet and degrading user experience (UX).
How can you be ready for the switch? It’s simple. Only post human generated content. I’m not saying you have to eliminate AI content altogether. You can sprinkle in AI content as you wish, just make sure it is accurate information. AI images are fine too. But just so you know, in the near future, search engines will be labeling articles or posts containing any AI content. Search results will have a small tag which will read something like “contains AI content”. This may be detrimental to your traffic. You are already seeing this tag show up on videos on YouTube and posts on social media.
I’m not sure when search engines will begin to downgrade AI content value. It could very well happen in 2026. I say 2027 at the latest.
Final Word: Use AI as a tool to help you write. Don’t replace human writers with AI. You will be immune to any anti-AI algorithm changes which are most certainly going to happen.
