Site Loading Time Becoming More Important

Page speed and SEOIn Google’s constant quest to serve up the best websites possible, they are always tweaking their requirements. One factor that has been very important this decade and will be for the immediate future is site load time. How long does it take your website to load from when first requested? That is what every webmaster should be asking his/herself. This is a key component to proper web design and SEO.

We all have been to a site that seemingly takes for ever to load. You are trying to scroll down but the page won’t move because it is busy loading some ad. Most of the time the reason this is taking so long is because the site is identifying where you are located and then it is trying to serve ads related to your area. This can ad a lot of load time onto the website. Continue reading

Test Your Contact Form Regularly

contact form monitoringCan you imagine how disappointed you would feel if you found out that you had less sales this year because your contact form wasn’t working properly? Hundreds or maybe thousands of dollars of revenue because of a failure of your website to function properly.

Well, it happens. The reasons it happens can vary but in today’s web world, the most likely reason is that the contact form plug-in changed and broke the coding. The changes happen when the plug-ins are updated. Recently, there was a big mess when the people who manage the Contact Form 7 plug-in released an updated version that broke the functionality on many websites. Continue reading

Having a Website and Social Media is a Must

website and social media marketingIf you have a business, having an online presence in the form of a website is a must. Having social media pages for you business, such as Facebook and Twitter, is also essential. But, having one without the other is not a good idea.

We have found that the crossover between social media and the traditional website is a major factor in clients familiarizing themselves with a business. Both social media and a website serve similar functions, but a website really helps flesh out your capabilities and allows you to present the customer with exactly what you want them to see. Getting Spammed from Your Contact Form Recently?

Are you starting to get spammed through your website contact form again? You are not alone. Literally millions of people have been receiving heavy doses of spam this week. The problem is that Contact Form 7, a form used by millions of people within their WordPress installations, has stopped working with Google ReCaptcha V2. When you log in, you get an alert to change your site keys to reCaptcha V3, a version that is supposed to work in the background. The problem is, spam is still getting through.

I have searched the web and have found many complaints but no answers from WordPress. I suppose the best thing to do to save time/money at this juncture is to wait and see of they sort this out and tighten up the security. Continue reading

Single Page Optimization

learn how to optimize you article on the webThere is not point in having a very optimized page that is within a website which is itself not optimized. Google would not see this page as the “single great apple in a basket of rotten apples”, rather, they would just see it as a basket of rotten apples. With that said, I am going to discuss the proper optimization of a single page.

Industry practices in this matter change all the time as Google itself changes. It is important to stay updated on all the algorithm changes at Google by reading their various blogsContinue reading

Having a Good Website is Still a Must

website vs social media for businessMany businesses are having great success using their social media to keep customers informed. A Facebook, Instagram or Twitter page can be your number one asset when it comes to communicating directly with your current or potential customers. But, you should never assume that social media can replace your website.

Here are some reasons why social media accounts can never replace a good website: Continue reading

Mobile vs. Laptop Usage

mobile vs laptop 2018In the business of designing and optimizing websites, it helps to know who your target audience is. It also helps to know what devices people will be using to look at your websites.

For the purpose of this article, “desktop” and “laptop” will be combined and be simply referred to as “laptop”. The nature of this article is to determine mobile device browsing vs. non-mobile device browsing regarding website design and optimization.

It has long been known that mobile devices would take over as the single most used type of computer device that people use to browse the web. A recent study suggests the number is about half and half. I don’t think this is the relevant statistic though. To me, the relevant question is to ask who uses mobile devices exclusively vs. those people who use a mix of the two. (I will leave out people who use laptops only and don’t use mobile devices because those numbers are so low that they are negligible.) Continue reading

When I Share a Link on Facebook I Get No Preview Image

preview image not showing for facebookFacebook is a lot of things. It is probably the best pure social media platform there is in regards to connecting with friends old and new. It helps small businesses grow by connecting them with their customer base. For all of its advantages it does suffer some imperfections and some of them are down right annoying.

One thing that tends to happen to a company as large as Facebook is they create a product so large that it gets beyond their full control. They make changes and just keep rolling forward. Something that may have worked perfectly fine for years, does not work any longer. And with Facebook, there is no real support staff. Their logic is that “hey, its free, why should we care what you think?” Have you ever tried to contact Facebook directly? It is laughable.  Continue reading

Test Your Contact Forms Often

contact for tips seo melbourneThis week I was looking for a new landscaping company to cut and trim my grass. I went to a couple of their websites and filled out the contact form then clicked “send”.  What happened next is why I am writing this blog.

The forms (on two different sites) returned an error page which meant that they was broken. It made me think, “how long have these forms been broken and how much business have these companies lost because of this?”. Personally, I try to test the contact forms a few times a month for each one of my clients. But, if you are a business owner, you should test it weekly. Think about if you never got that big client that you currently have. That would be infuriating.  Continue reading

SSL Certificate is a Must for Your Site Immediately

With 90% of  all internet searches done using Google and 50-60% of all internet users using Google Chrome as their browser of choice, it is imperative to optimize your site to their specifications. Google is always tweaking and changing their search algorithms to better improve the user’s experience. Most recently, Google has made it clear they want all websites to have an SSL certificate.

This certificate is a virtual certification that is installed on the server by the host that shows that the site is secure. In reality, it is just one small piece of security that may add to the visitor’s web safety (or at least feeling of safety). A secure website has less chance of being hacked through contact forms and other scripts running on the site. Continue reading
